Today I had yet another interview. I think it went well. It was at the same place I applied to teach ESL. Its basically a non-profit organization that provides services for Chinese Immigrant families. The program I applied for was teaching in an Enrichment Program. Basically, its just going to come down to whether or not she feels that I can teach by myself since Ive never done that with kids. I mean Ive taught college, but thats NOT the same as teaching a bunch of little kids-not to mention different subject matter, and I would be responsible for making my own lesson plans. The downside to the job is that it only lasts 7 weeks and is only for 20 hours a week. And that would not make me enough money to move to CA. Well, it would be enough to move-but not to live there while I looked for a job/waited to start subbing. sigh...I wouldn't have even applied but it turned out I was desperate, and plus I thought it would be good experience. The more teaching experience I have the better I figure. Once again, I will be ok if I dont get this job. Like really ok. I kind of just felt like I had to apply because I felt like I should explore every option open to me. If it doesnt work out-and hopefully I will know soon-I am going to try YET another temp agency. And if that doesnt work out-I have no idea.
At the same time I am also attempting to finish applications for JCs in CA. There are a couple of schools that are accepting applications for Faculty pools. Plus, I am also going to try just sending my resume and application to different colleges regardless of whether or not they are advertising for help and see what happens. If I get a job in CA it would mean I would have to save less money-and plus it would just be really great to have a job waiting for me-more security all that(obvi). I dont know how it would all work with interviews-or even if I could even be hired/interviewed right away-the schools are only looking for Faculty Pools after all. This is all speculation though at this point, and I am still trying to be patient-though I think I am getting better.
And, one good thing with all these interviews is that I am getting experience in doing them, and the more it becomes more routine, the less nervous I feel about it-the more I feel prepared. Although I still feel like Im terrible at interviews. My problem is that I dont always understand a question if its at all vague-and dont always know what kind of answer the interviewer is looking for. And Im just not good at expressing myself on the spot. If Im prepared I feel better. It can be as simple as looking at questions beforehand. Like my interviewer today let me look at the questions she would be asking me before the interview started, and that helped me collect my thoughts a bit. Just that one thing was really helpful. Oh and I found this great article about working at a JC and in it there is a list of questions one can expect to be asked interviewing for a job at a JC. And, there is also a list of separate questions for foreign language teachers. So, Im going to be going over that a lot this summer and practicing answers for them. woohoo!
Anyway, not to be too long or boring. The rest of what happened today I will blog about in a separate post.
