Disney

A lot of people know-Im a Disney freak. I love Disney-mainly for the innovation and genius of the founder of the empire-Walt Disney. However, Ive been sorely disappointed with a lot of the animated films the company has turned out lately. But, there is hope. Disney is slated to release a new film called The Princess and the Frog during the holiday season-a film that harkens back to its earlier classics like Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin and the Little Mermaid. Yes thats right, hand drawn animation and based on a fairy tale. Just the way I like it. :) I saw a trailer for The Frog Princess while seeing Disney/Pixar's Up, and I have to say-I cant wait!




Speaking of Up-definitely go see it! I wasnt sure what to expect of this film since I didnt really know what it was about. I ended up seeing it by chance- and was pleasantly surprised! I loved it! The film opens with a scene that is so heartwarming and touching and beautiful it literally moved me to tears. Seriously, I was bawling in the theater. And it only got better from there. I wont reveal too much because its better/funner if you find out for yourself.

Yes, there is hope for Disney yet. I want to go back to Disneyland! :)

Sooo hilarious!!!

My dad

My dad is always finding funny objects around the house and making things out of them. One recent example: modifying a Jack Ball. Little background: every time I go to California I make a stop to Jack in the Box to stock up on Jack Balls, antenna toppers with Jack from Jack in the Box on them. My brothers and I love to have the Jack Ball antenna toppers. The reason I am constantly needing more is either they get old and lose eyes, mouths, etc or people steal them! Thats right people are constantly stealing the things even though there are no Jack in the Box restaurants around here and I doubt if anyone even knows what that is. Sigh. So anyway, the last time I got Jack balls they were selling beanie jack-with jack wearing a beanie-or a hat with a propellar on it. So, my dad decided to fix it so that the beanie actually spins on its own. Here's a video I took of it.

hehe...hopefully you can see the spinning propellar well enough. Just a funny thing I thought I'd share :)

New Beginnings

With the trees finally starting to bud it makes it even easier to tell which ones died in the ice storm. We have a bunch that are goners-which is going to be a huge job getting them cleared away. nice

And I decided to start playing guitar. Its been pretty fun so far. My brothers have been pretty helpful (two of them play). And Matt has allowed me full use of his acoustics ( below) :)

One of the things I'll (hopefully) be doing this summer

Im signed up to instruct a class this summer as part of a kids camp type program on campus called Kids on Campus. Its basically an enrichment program that gives students exposure to the campus as well as allows them to enroll in a wide variety of classes. The class Im teaching is geared towards 7th to 9th graders. Cathedral of the Pines

One of the things that is becoming apparent with the melting of all the snow is just how many trees split/died/cracked/fell down during the ice storm. Its really staggering. Lining all the streets are the limbs that people have cleared from their land.

One place that was particularly hard hit is the Cathedral of the Pines. And its a shame because it was such a beautiful place before. It still is, but what with all the trees theyve had to clear out, it really has lost something.This is what the Cathedral looked like three years ago. If you look close you can see all the trees surrounding the monument. Those were trees in the clearing/sanctuary part.

This is the sanctuary now. You can see where theyve had to dig up the trees.And a bulldozer that was working on clearing.

It really is a shame. Makes me sad.

New cam!

So-with the money the government so graciously returned to me this year I was able to pay off my credit card, put some toward savings and....buy a new camera! I just received it in the mail today. I really wanted a camera with a good zoom on it that I could use to take good outdoor pics. Im going to be going to Yosemite this summer-and just really wanted a good camera for that-as well as any other outdoor activities. I went with the Kodak easyshare-my old camera is a kodak and I really like the company-their software is so easy to use. Plus its American. Gotta help domestic sales!

So today it was such a beautiful day I went out and experimented with taking some pics down our street. Here are a few I took.

Easter: or Authentic Italian in Dublin, NH!

DelRossi's Trattoria, Dublin

For a while now, my brothers and I have been trying to make it to DelRossi's Trattoria in Dublin, NH. We all have such different schedules, and its been hard trying to coordinate the trip. Easter Sunday gave us a good excuse to go-since most of us were off for the day.

I had heard about DelRossi's, and it seemed to have a good reputation-and then one day my brother Matt told me he knew the chef-since he is a regular customer at the Dunkin' Donuts where my brother works.

Even though the idea was partly Matt's I have to admit I was a little afraid about going with my little brothers. Especially since for one of them (not naming names ;) ) a good meal consists of easy fries and stoufers microwaveable mac n cheese. And the other-doesnt even like spaghetti. Knowing that there certainly would not be any hamburgers, fries, or mac n cheese on the menu-I was a little nervous that there would be complaints, especially since we were all paying for ourselves.

However, I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone found something on the menu. There were no complaints, and we had a great dinner with good conversation. Case in point: When my mom ordered lamb chops she mentioned that she had never eaten that particular meat before. Matt responded by asking what she was talking about-he always remembered her making it? None of us know how he got this idea, and we tried to convince him otherwise. I told him that he used to WATCH lamb chop on TV, but we never ate it. haha...I dont know where he gets these things.

At any rate, I was pleased by the food as well. There was an ad in the paper displaying what the selection for Easter dinner would be. I was excited to see Saltimbocca alla Romana on the list. I love Saltimbocca. When I got to the restaurant however and saw how they prepared it I was a little worried. They put peas in it-for some reason. And they cook it along with pecorino romano cheese and pour it over fettucine. Now, I dont want to sound like a food snob-but Ive had Saltimbocca alla Romana-in Rome-multiple times- and Ive never had it like that. I know there are variations on how to cook it-but I was still iffy.

I ended up ordering the Saltimbocca-without peas-and it was good! I was happy about it. And my brothers all liked their meals as well. And my mom also liked her lamb chops. I must say I tried a bite and it was indeed good. We joked that my brother Frankie had veal and my mom had lamb chops. All the baby animals. dying for us. We are so mean. :(

At any rate, we all agreed that it was a good restaurant and a great experience. And we all agreed we would definitely like to go back. Except Frankie who said it was too pricey: we went to a restaurant in the North End once that was really good, and about half the price. I will agree that there are a lot of great restaurants in the North End that are cheaper-(depending on when you go)-and just as good-but still. I think it was worth it.


So that was Easter. Afterwards, we just went home and just hung out. Matt went into work for a couple hours where-funnily enough-the chef he knows came in. They talked, and the chef said we shouldve told him we were there. hehe...

And speaking of climbing...

I am determined to climb Mt. Monadnock sometime during this spring/summer.

Mt. Monadnock is a very celebrated natural landmark around here. It is so prominent, a lot of people refer to it simply as "the mountain." It is touted as one of the most climbed mountains in the United States.

I've been wanting to climb Mt. Monadnock for a while now, but what with me going to Yosemite this summer-I figured it would be great practice for Half Dome-which I am also determined to climb!

I figure I will wait until the weather gets better to climb, and my mom wants to go with me-so we both want to get into shape before doing so. We'll see. I'll keep you updated!

Spring!

I can't tell you how happy I am that Spring is here. Yesterday was a beautiful day and my mom and aunt and I went out to eat at Parker's Maple Barn. I just love going there!

Spring in NH means maple syrup season and Parker's is both a restaurant and sugaring house. They make their own maple syrup there, and I was able to take the tour and learn a bit more about this process.

The vital component to getting the sap to run is nights that are below freezing, followed by days above. Pressure along with gravity induces the flow of sap out of the tree and into the buckets. Its really awesome how it works-just another example of the wonder of God's creation. :)

After the maple barn, we drove home and along the way stopped at a historic marker-which was Uncle Sam's boyhood home. Its pretty interesting to read the sign and the history of it all.

Then, I decided to take some random pics around town-taking advantage of the nice weather. I couldn't help but think of this Beatle's song yesterday. It completely represents how I feel about Spring this year. It seemed like it took years to get here!

Heartwrenching

That's the only way I can describe "Seven Pounds," starring Will Smith and directed by Italian director Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit of Happyness, L'ultimo baccio). It's a poignant depiction of how sometimes the hardest act of forgiveness we will ever have to carry out is that of forgiving ourselves.

This week in my class I am going to be talking about music. I am excited because Italian music is one of my favorite things! I just thought I would share some of what I'm going to be talking about. Some of it is pretty interesting! :) At least to me!

First off-did you know that every year the Italians hold a music festival in Sanremo, Italy? Appropriately, it is titled Il festival di Sanremo. Much like American Idol, Italians vote on the winners. The difference is that in this competition-the song, not the singer is most emphasized. It's all about good songwriting. Very often singer/ songwriters who win go onto big success. One example is Andrea Bocelli.

Did you further know that it was at this very festival that the song, "Nel blu dipinto di blu," was sung by Domenico Modugno?

You might know the song as "Volare," popularized in America by Dean Martin-among others.

It's the only song by an Italian artist to hit the top of the American Billboard 100 charts.

Something else...

Have you ever heard the song O Sole Mio? If you have, does it sound familiar to you? It should.

Now think about Elvis' song "Its now or never." Yes that's right-it's the same song! The melody for It's now or never was taken from O Sole Mio. So you could've been singing an Italian song all along without knowing it! hehe...

One last thing I thought I would share. Italian artist Laura Pausini recently released a song with British star James Blunt. The song is called, "Primavera in anticipo." It's all about telling someone they have given you a rebirth-an early spring. It's sung partly in Italian and partly in English. I love it. I love when Italian artists collaborate with English speaking ones because you get to see the English speakers singing in Italian and the Italian ones singing in English! Makes me very happy. :) I'm going to try to include videos for both songs in this post. I just love youtube because I can use it to show my students great footage of old songs like Nel blu dipinto di blu, along with current music videos!

I found another interesting quote-which can relate to ideas of equality-and democracy. Kinda funny story...

So early yesterday morning a lady from our church knocked on our door and said she had a flat tire and wanted to know if we could help her? My dad is an expert in such matters so my mom ran to wake him up. The lady kept saying that she had gotten a pen lodged in her tire yet, upon closer inspection, it was discovered that it was not in fact a pen but a screwdriver-which only begs the question 1.) how is it possible to get a screwdriver lodged in your tire after running over it? (I just don't get it, if the screwdriver is lying flat in the road. I know the same thing happens with nails-which I also don't understand if they're lying flat in the road-but it just seems much more of a difficulty with a screwdriver right?) and 2.) what are the odds that this would happen to her tire right in front of our house-the house of someone she knows? I don't know-maybe I am just not learned enough in the mechanics of such matters-but it just seems completely random to me-not to mention highly unlikely!

I thought the story ended with the lady getting her tire fixed, but I was wrong. Yesterday evening, after I returned from running errands my brother related to me further details in the mysterious screwdriver flat drama. Apparently, my dad ended up patching up the woman's tire and getting the screwdriver out-but not before asking if he could keep it for himself. The woman complied, and my dad set out promptly for Sears to exchange the old screwdriver for a new one! Only my dad...

Announcement! California here I come!

I just booked a flight to CA for Aug 4-11!! My good friend Becky and I-and some other friends-are going to take a trip to Yosemite! Im so excited! I have never been there and Ive been wanting to go for some time now! I cant wait!! Yippee!!

I was able to find a really good deal through Travelocity. I have two layovers on both legs of my trip-but oh well...it will be a long day-but thats ok. It will be worth it in the end.

We are planning to go to Yosemite Aug 5-9- so anyone not going to Yosemite hopefully I can try to see you then ;) . Cant wait!

2 weeks and counting...

Im proud to announce that its been about two weeks now since Ive taken a sip of Dr Pepper. It really is a milestone for me. Its even a little hard for me to believe how easy it actually has been. After those first three or four days things got increasingly easier. Sometimes I really want to grab one, but I think it has more to do with just retraining myself to reach for something else.

So without all this Dr Pepper, Ive been drinking a lot of juice instead. Also, Odwalla smoothies. I love Odwalla-they are really expensive-but I figure with the money I save not drinking Dr Pepper I can buy myself a few every week.
My methadone-odwalla smoothies and chocolate covered espresso beans. :)

And to replace the caffeine, I've been drinking a lot of cappuccino. I've also started eating chocolate covered espresso beans. If I ever feel myself craving more caffeine, I just pop a few of those and Im good to go. Overall I feel like Ive been ingesting A LOT less sugar-and its amazing how little I miss it.

International Women's Day!

Decisions...

So I really like my job. I really like where I work-I like the atmosphere and having my own autonomy. After all these positive statements you wouldn't think a but is coming but...it is.

The thing is I don't make enough money to support myself. So right now I'm having to decide whether I want to stay where I am or look for something somewhere else. I'm pretty much leaning toward the latter at the moment-I don't see what could keep me where I am except a drastic rise in salary. I mean, I kind of have two choices-I can stay where I am and look for a full time job for during the day and just do this on the side-or I could look for one full time job teaching Italian. It would be nice if I could do the latter-so I wouldn't have to worry about all the extra work that comes along with teaching-preparation-grading-all that. I mean, finding a job teaching HS would be ideal. It will be really hard to leave this job-especially to leave a job in this economic climate...and I kind of even feel guilty about wanting more than I already have-even though what I have is not enough to sustain myself. And I also know that given this economic climate finding a job in my field might become increasingly difficult in the future. Im not even sure what the outlook is going to be for next year. Plus, what if I get a job somewhere-only to get a pink slip shortly after? Its a lot to consider...but-please just pray for me about all that: for guidance etc. I will definitely need it!

I dont usually watch the Simpsons....

But I might have to try to find a way to watch this week's episode (difficult considering we don't get FOX here). In it, Homer Simpson mortgages his house to pay for a Mardi Gras party. Of course he ends up in....FORECLOSURE! lol...

It just sounds really funny.

Our dessert called dessert rosa

One of my uncles gave my mom, my aunt, my cousin and I enough money to dine out at an Italian restaurant. Of course, he had a specific one in mind: Carabba's Italian grill. So, Saturday we all headed down to Rhode Island to check it out.
I ended up being very impressed. For a chain restaurant (and I'm wary of Italian chain restaurants) the food was excellent-the atmosphere was great and if its your birthday the waiters will sing to you in Italian-I was pretty pleased by that-even though their pronunciation was a little off-ok so Im nit-picky.
We started off with appetizers which included calamari-and yes I actually tried some. Not horrible, but not my favorite either. I also ordered an Italian sangria-yes I love sangria-and actually drank the whole thing. (a feat for me) Definitely recommended.
Then came soup and salad. I had the soup-minestrone-and it was amazing. I had never had minestrone quite like this before, but I ate every last bit.
For the main course I had the Pollo Rosa Maria-which was chicken stuffed with fontina cheese and prosciutto in a basil lemon butter sauce. Yummy!
We left some room for dessert too-a yellow cake with strawberry, banana and pineapple inside topped with real whipped cream. We also had ice cream in a caramel sauce topped with pecans. Now usually I dont like caramel or pecans, but this ice cream was great.
Hungry yet? Anyway, the point is Carabba's is great and if there is one near you I definitely recommend it. I look forward to going back if given the chance. Thanks Anthony for the meal!

Believe it or not..or...Avoiding Mountain Dew mouth

Recently I was watching a special on 20/20 about poor families in Appalachia. Now I've always known that there is an abundance of poor families in this area so I was happy that 20/20 was drawing more attention to the poor people we have in our own country. Then, I saw something I wasn't expecting. Apparently these families drink a lot of Mountain Dew. They come home from work or school and drink Mountain Dew all day until their teeth rot out of their mouths. The dentists who work in the area call it Mountain Dew mouth. Im not saying I blame them. Its like one of their only luxuries you might say.
Not only that but, as some might know-I drink a whole lot of soda myself. That is a lot of sugar, a lot of calories, and a lot of extraneous bad material going into my mouth and body.
Anyway-onto my major point, and that is: I decided to try to stop and or drastically reduce my soda intake. I dont want my teeth to rot away, and besides that there are many healthier things I could be putting into my body.
I havent had a Dr. Pepper in almost three days now and so far its been pretty hard! Im so JONESIN even right now. Just to clarify-I didnt cut caffeine cold turkey-that wouldve been a compounded difficulty and I dont think I could survive that at the moment. We're starting small for now. But I really do think I was hooked on all that sugar and high fructose corn syrup I was ingesting. Even though I do get caffeine from other sources now I still crave soda! I know its nothing like kicking cigarettes or anything but mind you-ever since I was about 12 Ive been drinking Dr Pepper on a regular basis. Thats 14 years non stop! There were times I couldnt drink it-for example when I was in other countries. But even then I drank Coke regularly.
My goal right now is to try 40 days without soda-or having at least drastically reduced my intake. I figure one every now and then wont hurt-besides I dont want to set myself up for too much failure.
So anyway, I will keep you all updated on everything if you're interested!

Major Praise: or the chimney fire drama

Once again I just have to state that you just never know when you get up in the morning what is going to happen that day. Obviously. But its why worrying is so pointless-you dont know what the future holds anyway. Maybe nothing will happen at all-maybe you will be sitting at home like you always do and then all of a sudden you have a chimney fire and the whole fire dept is at your house.
That happened to us Wednesday night. Thankfully my dad figured out pretty quick about the chimney and put out the fire in our stove and was able to contain it. Before that though, he had me call the fire dept.
I have to say waiting for them to arrive seemed like an eternity. On top of that is the fact that in Rindge we just have a volunteer fire dept so sometimes arrival can take a while. Luckily though, before they even came my dad got the chimney fire out so that it was just smoking when they arrived. (yay babbo!)
And then-the whole dept was at our house! They ended up going and checking the chimney for us just in case before taking off.
They told us not to use our stove until we get our chimney cleaned-and my dad was able to plead ignorance about that-playing the "we're from CA card." Not that there are no chimneys in CA-but we never had one. hehe... The guys were all really nice about it though, even apologizing for getting water in the house. (no prob!)
In the end, even though we didnt really need their help at least it ended up being a good drill for them. And I felt a lot better knowing they checked us out.
Its kinda scary thinking some kind of horrible catastrophe can befall you one day out of the blue, but at least it helps me to try not to take things for granted and to be thankful for everything.
Major praise that our roof didnt catch and that we and our house are all ok!!

The original slumdog

Many people have made the written how Slumdog Millionaire feels very similar to a Dickens novel. Including the following reviewer from Seattle Weekly. http://www.seattleweekly.com/2008-11-19/film/slumdog-millionaire-like-charles-dickens-in-mumbai/

Im excited that Slumdog won the Oscar because its a good story and a great film. And yes, it feels familiar to a Dickens epic-but it has its own take on the old tale that is original in itself. It just goes to show that some things never change in essence.

Appropriately, PBS' Masterpiece is featuring the works of Dickens in their new series this year. If you want to see the original Slumdog-Oliver Twist-I would definitely recommend first of all this modern take on the tale. It looks beautiful-with great actors-including Tom Hardy who recently starred in a production of Wuthering Heights-also featured on Masterpiece. (hotty). And its set to a wonderful modern musical score. Its just a great film.

Masterpiece has already aired parts 1 and 2 of Oliver-but surely there will be reruns. They will also be airing the classic version of David Copperfield with a young Daniel Radcliffe (of Harry Potter fame) in a breakout role.

In the end, if you liked Slumdog-you will like these classic Dickens adaptations. If you like Dickens, you will like Slumdog.

Where I work...

The entranceway to the college-appropriately (for me) titled the Appian Way. This shot doesn't show it, but when you walk in through this gate you can see the mountains in the distance ahead of you. Its one of my favorite parts of the campus.

I've never actually seen this place-its the Redfern Arts center. I decided to add it cause it looks cool. :)

This is a view of Parker and Morrison Halls. My office is in Parker Hall, and Morrison Hall is where the Modern Languages Department is housed. So thats my other home...where my mailbox is, the copy machine, etc.
